Is your sushi brand killing whales?

Dear Laila,

With only a few days until this year’s International Whaling Commission (IWC) meeting, it is critical that we take steps now to end the cruelty of all forms of commercial whaling.

As one of the last remaining large-scale distributors of whale meat in Japan, seafood company Kyokuyo Co., Ltd has been a major player in Japan’s history of commercial whaling since the 1930’s.

The premier sushi quality seafood distributor in the US, True World Foods, Inc., announced a partnership with Kyokuyo in 2006 to sell sushi in the US under the brand name “Polar Seas.”

Tell True World Foods to end the raw deal for whales

If you eat at the sushi restaurants and supermarkets supplied by True World Foods, you are probably unaware that you could be supporting a company at the heart of the commercial whale hunting industry in Japan.

Kyokuyo’s sale of whale meat in Japan fuels the continuation of whaling by Japan, which violates the worldwide ban on commercial whaling. Starting this year, Japan plans to cruelly hunt a total of 1035 whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary alone, including 50 humpbacks.

Many whale species have still not recovered from the intensive commercial whaling of the past. And today they face many other threats such as marine pollution, underwater noise, ship strikes, by-catch, entanglements and climate change. They simply cannot withstand the resurgence of commercial whaling.

Please urge True World Foods to persuade its partner Kyokuyo to immediately stop all whale meat sales and distribution and to shut down the production of canned whale meat in Japan.

It will take much more than simple verbal condemnations to stop commercial whaling. It will take definitive action with real consequences for those who continue to defy international law.

This painful slaughter of whales does not benefit science, animals or people.

For the whales,

Fred O’ Regan
President and CEO

P.S. Most people still think the whales were saved decades ago. Please forward this email to your friends to let them know that whales face more threats today than ever before.
